It is called absent because everything that should make it a moon is missing—even while its light dominates the sky.
Present light, absent world
To unaided eyes, the phenomenon presents an immense coherent face with a luminous rim, apparent depth, and slowly changing internal branchwork. It is emissive rather than conventionally phased and shows no stable craters, continents, or topography.
Modern Moon expeditions crossed its apparent position and found no rock, atmosphere, gravity, or landable surface. It casts no ordinary lunar shadow and raises no lunar tide. The familiar word “moon” describes its place in Veyran life, not its physical composition.
What instruments add
Ordinary viewing resolves no stars within the luminous face. Calibrated narrowband instruments recover only some repeatable co-directional stellar signatures, never a clean image of a background sky.
Its illumination on water is broad, broken, and observer-relative. A celebrated northern composition recurs in Lumael, but the Moon is not continuously centered, fixed to the horizon, or known to be locked to the sun.
Two names, two registers
The Absent Moon is the ordinary cross-regional name. It states the central physical problem without claiming a cause: Veyra lives beneath a moonlike presence whose expected world cannot be found.
The Impossible Moon is a poetic and sometimes common name inherited from Ilyra Naven's early post-Silence poem The Shore That Followed. It appears especially in Lumael art, intimate speech, and writing about unresolved longing. The poem gives the mystery human language; it supplies no evidence of intention, a path, or pre-Silence behavior.
Meaning remains open
No accepted account explains whether the field records, measures, remembers, connects, or merely occurs. The Register Hypothesis and Displaced Horizon are disputed attempts to organize portions of the evidence, not decoded answers.
The Moon's history is entangled with the Silence, but correlation is not yet cause. No current evidence establishes a vanished physical moon, a builder, an intelligence, an audience, or a message.
